Situated in Via N. Sauro, the Town Hall dominates Piazza Cavour with its imposing facade. It was built by the Cuprense architect Mattia Capponi from 1777 to 1785, in a neoclassical style with a prominent bell tower. Inside Roman and medieval tombstones are preserved.
The most important is dedicated to the emperor Antonio Pio, who established ancient Cupra Montana. In the hall on the ground floor you can see a large painting representing the martyrdom of St. Lorenzo, a copy of the same painting by Pietro da Cortona, painted in Rome in 1659. The Council Chamber has a decorated ceiling. This
room is also used for meetings and conferences of public interest.
The Palace is open to visitors during the opening days of the offices. The building is also home to the Municipal Library established in 1872 with the book collections from the Eremo Delle Grotte. The library has about 15,000 volumes, including 434 books printed before 1500. The historical archives preserve precious registers of the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries. The library, recently renovated, features free internet access, video for viewing documentaries and films, a play area for children and a good supply of books in foreign languages.
